Mozambique's Coastal Birding Masterpiece

This 9-day coastal circuit showcases an entirely different Mozambique birding experience, tracing the Indian Ocean seaboard from accessible urban estuaries through vast protected wilderness, savanna spectacles, and the continent's finest marine and island-seabird opportunities.

The itinerary combines two birding modes rarely paired in Africa: first, classic savanna-wetland safari birding at Maputo Special Reserve and Limpopo National Park (targeting raptors, waterbirds, and open-country specialists), then genuine pelagic and island-seabird exploration at the Bazaruto Archipelago , an experience essentially unavailable elsewhere on the African continent. The habitat mosaic , mangrove channels, tidal flats, coastal lagoons, savanna floodplains, island dunes, and mangrove-lined estuaries , ensures constant species turnover. This is birding that crosses boundaries between terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

Our approach varies with each ecosystem: vehicle-based game drives work savanna landscapes for raptors and open-country specialists; boat excursions navigate coastlines and archipelago waters; wading and shoreline work target tidal specialists; island surveys reveal seabird colonies and roosting concentrations. This methodological diversity maintains engagement and targets the full breadth of available species.

Accommodation transitions along the coastal corridor: urban boutique hotels in Maputo for accessible city-based birding, safari lodges in protected reserves for wildlife immersion, and island eco-lodges at Bazaruto providing direct access to seabird experiences. Each venue is selected for optimal birding access rather than luxury considerations.
