Tour Overview
Mozambique's Coastal Birding Masterpiece
This 9-day coastal circuit showcases an entirely different Mozambique birding experience, tracing the Indian Ocean seaboard from accessible urban estuaries through vast protected wilderness, savanna spectacles, and the continent's finest marine and island-seabird opportunities.
The itinerary combines two birding modes rarely paired in Africa: first, classic savanna-wetland safari birding at Maputo Special Reserve and Limpopo National Park (targeting raptors, waterbirds, and open-country specialists), then genuine pelagic and island-seabird exploration at the Bazaruto Archipelago , an experience essentially unavailable elsewhere on the African continent. The habitat mosaic , mangrove channels, tidal flats, coastal lagoons, savanna floodplains, island dunes, and mangrove-lined estuaries , ensures constant species turnover. This is birding that crosses boundaries between terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
Our approach varies with each ecosystem: vehicle-based game drives work savanna landscapes for raptors and open-country specialists; boat excursions navigate coastlines and archipelago waters; wading and shoreline work target tidal specialists; island surveys reveal seabird colonies and roosting concentrations. This methodological diversity maintains engagement and targets the full breadth of available species.
Accommodation transitions along the coastal corridor: urban boutique hotels in Maputo for accessible city-based birding, safari lodges in protected reserves for wildlife immersion, and island eco-lodges at Bazaruto providing direct access to seabird experiences. Each venue is selected for optimal birding access rather than luxury considerations.
Day by Day
Itinerary
Arrive at Maputo International Airport and transfer to your coastal city hotel. After a welcome briefing, spend the afternoon birding in nearby coastal woodland and estuarine habitats near the city. This gentle introduction targets mangrove and coastal forest specialists before the main circuit begins.
Enter southern Mozambique's finest protected area. Morning transfer with birding stops along the way. Afternoon game drive with exclusive birding focus, targeting large terrestrial and raptor species. Maputo Special Reserve is one of the region's premier sites for savanna and wetland birds.
A full day immersed in the reserve's remarkable diversity. Early morning and late afternoon game drives maximize birding opportunities and wildlife viewing. Large birds, raptors, and wetland specialists feature prominently, with strong chances of elephant, buffalo, and antelope as well.
Scenic transfer northward with frequent birding stops along riverine corridors and floodplains. The transition from coastal to savanna habitats brings new species assemblages. Arrive at Limpopo National Park for late afternoon exploration.
A full day exploring Limpopo's diverse habitats. Morning floodplain birding targets waders and waterbirds in wet grasslands. Afternoon savanna exploration focuses on grassland specialists, raptors, and large terrestrial birds. This park is exceptional for both diversity and abundance.
Morning departure from Limpopo with scenic drive to Vilankulo, the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. Afternoon beach and coastal birding introduces marine and island specialists. Vilankulo is a transition point between savanna and marine ecosystems.
A full day exploring the Bazaruto Archipelago by boat. Excursions to islands, tidal flats, dunes, and coral shores reveal a distinct assemblage of seabirds and shorebirds. This is Africa's premier seabird spectacle, featuring terns, plovers, and rare coastal species.
Morning island birding before boat return to mainland. Scenic coastal drive south to Inhambane, with frequent stops for shorebird scans, mangrove exploration, and coastal forest walks. Inhambane's mangrove-lined coasts provide habitat for unique specialists.
Optional early morning birding in Inhambane's coastal woodland and estuaries before the drive back to Maputo. Final chance to observe coastal and mangrove specialists. Afternoon transfer to Maputo International Airport for departure.
