Madagascar's Dry Endemic Circuit

This 8-day specialist birding tour is designed to showcase Madagascar's extraordinary endemic birds across its most distinctive dry habitats and forest types.

Departing from Antananarivo, the circuit progresses southwest through the dramatic sandstone formations of Isalo National Park, descends to the rarely visited transition forests of Zombitse-Vohibasia , one of Madagascar's most localized endemic hotspots. From there, the route traverses westward through the otherworldly spiny desert of Ifaty and Tsimanampetsotsa, where Sub-desert Meisite and Long-tailed Ground-Roller roam among octopus trees and baobabs.

Accommodation is carefully selected to place birders within or directly adjacent to prime habitats , from canyon lodges at Isalo to spiny desert camps at Ifaty, and forest ecolodges at Ankarafantsika , ensuring early dawn walks and evening sessions that maximize sightings of these remarkable endemic specialists.

Itinerary

D1
Antananarivo Fly to Tuléar Isalo Transit · Sandstone canyons arrival

Morning flight to Tuléar on Madagascar's dry southwestern coast, then drive northeast to Isalo National Park's dramatic sandstone formations carved by millennia of water and wind. Afternoon canyon birding targets Benson's Rock Thrush , an elegant endemic thrush , perching boldly on eroded pinnacles with commanding views, and Madagascar Partridge flushing from shaded canyon floors. Explore the red rock canyons as golden evening light paints the formations in hues that seem almost surreal, revealing additional canyon-dwelling species in the dramatic topography.

Species to expect Benson's Rock Thrush · Madagascar Partridge · Madagascar Hoopoe · Madagascar Bee-eater · Cuckoo Roller

Zombitse-Vohibasia National Park Zombitse · Transition forest mega-tick

Drive to Zombitse-Vohibasia for an entire morning dedicated to locating the extremely range-restricted Appert's Tetraka , a small warbler found almost nowhere else on Earth, making this forest visit a birding priority. Giant Coua struts with purpose along the forest floor, demonstrating different ecological strategies within Madagascar's coua radiation. Roosting Torotoroka Scops Owls and White-browed Owls are systematically located by your guide using knowledge of their preferred daytime shelter sites. This compact but biodiverse transition forest delivers exceptional endemic species in just a few hours of focused birding, making it one of Madagascar's most important reserves.

Priority targets Appert's Tetraka · Giant Coua · Coquerel's Coua · Torotoroka Scops Owl · White-browed Owl · Madagascar Spinetail · Cuckoo Roller · Hook-billed Vanga

Ifaty Spiny Forest , 2 Days Ifaty · Spiny desert dawn walks

Two full days in Madagascar's most alien and otherworldly landscape , a surreal desert of geometric Didierea, octopus-armed Alluaudia, and gnarled baobabs that seem to belong to another planet. Dawn walks through spiny thickets target the cryptic Sub-desert Mesite moving in family groups through leaf litter with the wariness of a ground-specialist, the elegant Long-tailed Ground-Roller , one of Earth's most range-restricted birds , sprinting across heat-shimmering sandy clearings to escape the day's intensity, and Running Coua dashing urgently between protective cover. Lafresnaye's Vanga, with its striking appearance, perches boldly in the harsh open environment as if defying the desert, while Thamnornis Warbler works the thorny scrub with quiet efficiency, demonstrating how diverse bird strategies have evolved to exploit this extreme habitat.

Priority targets Sub-desert Mesite · Long-tailed Ground-Roller · Running Coua · Lafresnaye's Vanga · Thamnornis Warbler · Archbold's Newtonia · Sub-desert Brush Warbler · Red-shouldered Vanga · Sickle-billed Vanga · Madagascar Harrier-Hawk · Banded Kestrel

Tsimanampetsotsa National Park Tsimanampetsotsa · Alkaline lake & unique spiny forest

A full day exploring Tsimanampetsotsa's dramatic mineral-rich alkaline lake surrounded by spiny forest , a completely different habitat from Ifaty's terrestrial spiny thickets. Greater and Lesser Flamingos congregate in stunning numbers on the saline water, painting the lake in shades of rose and coral. Verreaux's Coua with its chocolate-and-white plumage and Madagascar Plover add species not found at Ifaty, emphasizing how nearby reserves maintain distinct species assemblages. The cave systems carved into limestone and the unique interface where desert transitions to water create an extraordinary birding setting offering opportunities for both spiny forest specialists and specialized waterbirds adapted to Madagascar's unique saline-lake environments.

Fly Tuléar Mahajanga Ankarafantsika Transit · Dry deciduous forest arrival

Fly north from the stark spiny desert to Mahajanga, then drive to Ankarafantsika National Park, transitioning dramatically from arid desert to lush dry deciduous forest. Afternoon birding in this completely different ecosystem introduces entirely new species assemblages. Schlegel's Asity males display their extraordinary iridescent wattles that glow electric blue and green in forest sunlight , a brilliance that rivals any African bird. Van Dam's Vanga, one of Madagascar's most localized and specialized vanga species found almost nowhere else, hunts methodically in the canopy, demonstrating the incredible ecological partitioning within the vanga family. This transition from spiny desert to dry deciduous forest represents one of Madagascar's most striking habitat changes, with distinctly different ecological structure and completely different bird communities.

Afternoon targets Schlegel's Asity · Van Dam's Vanga · Coquerel's Coua · Red-capped Coua · Rufous Vanga · Madagascar Pygmy Kingfisher
