Tour Overview
Central Mozambique's Ecological Masterpiece
This 5-day safari circuit showcases Mozambique's most ecologically diverse and accessible region , combining Africa's great ecological recovery story with spectacular wetland birding and authentic miombo woodland experience.
Gorongosa National Park stands as one of Africa's extraordinary conservation achievements: a landscape devastated during civil war, now restored into a functioning showcase of ecological complexity. Over 400 bird species call this park home across diverse habitats. The Cheringoma Plateau's mature miombo woodland represents southern Africa's finest example of this iconic habitat, where open structure allows excellent observation and vocal activity peaks during breeding season. The Zambezi Valley's grand river system creates Africa's largest seasonal floodplain spectacle, attracting waterbird concentrations that rival the world's greatest wetlands.
We operate as a small group with expert ornithologist guidance, emphasizing vehicle-based game-drive birding at Gorongosa and Zambezi, woodland walks at Cheringoma, and boat-based wetland work where water permits. This methodology suits the habitats and maximizes both flagship sightings and unexpected finds.
Five days permit thorough exploration of three dramatically different ecosystems , a rare opportunity in African birding. Early-morning starts, thermal-break afternoons, and sunset sessions ensure maximum species detection. Comfortable lodge accommodations allow full engagement with the landscape and wildlife experiences that define central Mozambique.
Day by Day
Itinerary
Arrive in Beira and transfer to Gorongosa National Park. Afternoon birding in woodlands and floodplains introduces you to the park's diverse avifauna. Green-headed Orioles call from the canopy, while African Pygmy Geese dabble in shallow wetlands. Dinner and orientation at your lodge.
A full day in Gorongosa's heart. Morning wetland birding from the vehicle explores flooded grasslands and lake edges where massive waterbird concentrations gather. Wattled Cranes stride through shallow water, African Skimmers skim the surface, and White-backed Night Herons roost in reed beds. Afternoon savanna exploration adds Secretarybirds and raptors. Sunset from a scenic viewpoint over the floodplains.
Ascend from Gorongosa's floodplains to the Cheringoma Plateau's miombo woodlands. This transition zone offers entirely different bird communities. Miombo Tits call from the canopy in active mixed flocks. Böhm's Bee-eaters perch prominently, and Pale-billed Hornbills move through open woodland. The higher elevation and drier woodland create a distinct acoustic landscape. Afternoon rest and evening birding from the lodge grounds.
Descend from the plateau into the dramatic Zambezi Valley. Boat safaris on the Zambezi River create opportunities for scanning riverbanks and sandbars. African Skimmers roost on sandbanks, various herons and egrets hunt in shallows, and raptors ride thermals above the gorge. Afternoon is spent birding from the lodge and walking riverside trails. The Zambezi's grandeur combines with remarkable birding intensity.
Early morning final birding session along the Zambezi, scanning for any missed specialties before returning upriver. Return to Beira, with time to visit the market or relax before your onward journey. Final species tally, tour debrief, and farewells. Transfer to airport or onward destination.
