Tour Overview
A Complete Madagascar Birding Circuit
This 14-day specialist birdwatching tour is designed to deliver the complete Madagascar birding experience in a single expertly paced circuit.
Beginning in the capital Antananarivo, the tour progressively moves through all four of Madagascar's major biomes: the eastern rainforests of Andasibe and Ranomafana, the transition forest and sandstone formations of Zombitse and Isalo, the alien spiny desert landscapes of Ifaty and Tsimanampetsotsa, and finally the western dry deciduous forests of Ankarafantsika. This circuit covers all seven endemic bird families and targets over 100 endemic species.
Led by an expert field ornithologist specializing in Madagascar's unique avifauna, the tour employs meticulous habitat-specific search strategies. Dawn forest transects in rainforest, spiny desert ground-roller searches, nocturnal owl-listening sessions, and methodical canopy scanning ensure maximum species encounters. Pacing is deliberate, allowing thorough coverage of each ecosystem and cultural encounters with local communities.
Accommodation is strategically selected to place birders within prime habitats at each location , forest ecolodges at Andasibe and Ranomafana, bush camps in the spiny desert, and comfort lodges at transition sites , maximizing both pre-dawn and evening birding opportunities.
Day by Day
Itinerary
Welcome to Madagascar. After arrival at Ivato International Airport, transfer to your hotel in the capital and settle in. In the afternoon, visit Lac Tsarasaotra , a Ramsar wetland in Antananarivo , for an introduction to Malagasy waterbirds. Meller's Duck, Madagascar Pond Heron, and Malagasy Kingfisher offer a gentle first taste of the island's remarkable endemism.
Drive east through the central highlands, stopping at the Mangoro River bridge for Madagascan Pratincole , one of the island's most localized species. Arrive at Andasibe for afternoon forest-edge birding and a nocturnal walk for Rainforest Scops Owl and Collared Nightjar. The first night walk introduces Madagascar's endemic owls and insect soundscape.
Two full days in Madagascar's most accessible rainforest. Dawn walks in Analamazaotra target Indri calls and mixed vanga flocks, while deeper Mantadia trails offer chances at the elusive Scaly Ground-Roller , a species that moves quietly through the understory and requires patient searching. Velvet Asity displays on forest edges; Nuthatch Vanga works bark like a treecreeper. Night walks add Madagascar Long-eared Owl and nocturnal lemurs, creating an immersive rainforest experience.
Two days in one of Madagascar's richest forests. Steep trails through montane rainforest target Brown Mesite walking quietly through understory, Pitta-like Ground-Roller skulking in dark ravines, and the dazzling Yellow-bellied Sunbird-Asity at forest edges. Pollen's Vanga and Henst's Goshawk add to the exceptional endemic list. Multiple habitat elevations ensure diverse species coverage from water sources to canopy edges.
A scenic drive south through the central highlands to the dramatic sandstone formations of Isalo. En route birding in open country and grasslands adds Madagascar Hoopoe, Madagascar Bee-eater, and the first dry-country species. Afternoon canyon walks for Benson's Rock Thrush among Isalo's red sandstone cliffs provide stunning scenery and new species perspectives.
The morning is dedicated to Zombitse's transition forest , the only reliable site for the extremely localized Appert's Tetraka. Giant Coua struts along the forest floor, Coquerel's Coua feeds in the canopy, and roosting Torotoroka Scops Owls are carefully located with night-listening prior to sunset. This compact forest delivers an exceptional endemic list in just a few hours of focused birding.
Two full days in Madagascar's most alien landscape , a surreal world of sculptural Alluaudia trees and geometric Didierea that seem to predate human existence. Dawn walks through these octopus-armed plants target the cryptic Sub-desert Mesite moving through leaf litter in family groups, the elegant Long-tailed Ground-Roller , one of Earth's most range-restricted birds , sprinting across heat-shimmering sandy clearings to escape the day's heat, and Running Coua dashing urgently between protective cover. Lafresnaye's Vanga perches boldly in the open despite the harsh environment, while Thamnornis Warbler and Archbold's Newtonia work the spiny thickets with quiet efficiency. Evening walks during cooler hours reveal additional spiny desert specialists that shelter during peak heat.
A full day exploring this dramatic mineral-rich alkaline lake surrounded by spiny forest , a completely different habitat from Ifaty despite their geographic proximity. Greater and Lesser Flamingos congregate in impressive numbers, painting the saline waters in shades of rose and coral, creating one of Madagascar's most visually stunning natural spectacles. Verreaux's Coua in its chocolate-and-white plumage and Madagascar Plover add to the arid-zone endemic list, while specialized waterbirds adapted to Madagascar's unique saline-lake environments offer sightings not available at Ifaty's purely terrestrial spiny forest.
Fly north to Mahajanga and drive to Ankarafantsika National Park, transitioning from the stark spiny desert to Madagascar's extensive dry deciduous forests. Afternoon birding introduces an entirely different species assemblage reflective of this new habitat. Schlegel's Asity males display their extraordinary iridescent wattles that seem to glow electric blue and green in forest sunlight , a display that rivals any bird in Africa for sheer brilliance. Van Dam's Vanga , one of Madagascar's most localized vanga species, found almost nowhere else , hunts methodically in the canopy, demonstrating the incredible niche-partitioning of the vanga radiation. This transition from spiny desert to dry forest marks entry into the fourth major biome and a completely different evolutionary assemblage.
A full day combining intensive dry forest birding with focused lake-edge scanning at Lac Ravelobe, where this circuit's final major species accumulation occurs. The secretive White-breasted Mesite , completing your encounter with all three of Madagascar's mesite family members , walks through leaf litter beneath the deciduous canopy with the wariness of a species adapted to ground-level foraging. The critically endangered Madagascar Fish-Eagle, with fewer than 400 individuals remaining in the world, hunts powerfully over the lake while you watch, reminding you of conservation urgency. Madagascar Jacanas strut with delicate precision through floating hyacinth vegetation, adapted to freshwater wetlands in ways that emphasize Madagascar's ecological diversity. This is the final opportunity to accumulate additional dry-forest endemics before returning to the capital.
Drive back to Mahajanga for the flight to Antananarivo, with final birding opportunities along roadsides and forest edges during transit. Transfer to Ivato International Airport concludes this comprehensive circuit. You depart with a complete understanding of Madagascar's four major biomes and all five endemic bird families, having engaged directly with the evolutionary processes that shaped this extraordinary island's avifauna over 80 million years of isolation.
