Kenya's Most Extensive Birding Circuit

This is the tour for birders seeking complete geographic and ecological coverage of Kenya's avifauna. Eleven days, three biogeographic zones, and nearly 600 species , a genuine expedition.

We begin at Lake Victoria, where papyrus swamps harbor Papyrus Gonolek , a regional specialist found nowhere else in Kenya. Kakamega Forest, Africa's last Guineo-Congolian lowland rainforest fragment, hosts Blue-headed Bee-eaters and other Congo Basin species at the eastern limit of their range. Saiwa Swamp, Kenya's smallest national park, offers intimate Shoebill encounters and highland wetland specialists. Then we shift entirely , flying north to Samburu, where the Ewaso Nyiro River supports a completely different avifauna: Somali Ostriches, Vulturine Guineafowl, Golden-breasted Starlings, and the extraordinary Somali Bee-eater.

Each ecosystem demands different birding techniques. Lake Victoria requires patient boat work and understanding of papyrus ecology. Kakamega demands immersive forest walking and sound identification , many species remain invisible despite constant calls. Saiwa uses boardwalks for non-invasive observation of sensitive species. Samburu rewards thermal-watching and understanding of arid-zone water sources and vegetation patterns. By tour's end, you'll have developed and practiced skills appropriate to five distinct ecological zones.

Accommodation is strategically placed within each ecosystem , lakeside positioning at Kisumu for early morning wetland work, forest lodges at Kakamega putting us in the heart of Guineo-Congolian habitat, Saiwa's proximity for Shoebill encounters, and Samburu's riverside camps exploiting the Ewaso Nyiro's role as a wildlife and bird concentration corridor.
