Tour Overview
Volcanic Highlands & Savanna Plains
Five days to experience two of Africa's greatest birding landscapes , the dramatic volcanic crater and the endless Serengeti plains.
We begin in the volcanic highlands of Ngorongoro, where crater-rim forests host Schalow's Turacos and Golden-winged Sunbirds, and where the crater floor below swarms with flamingos, cranes, and waterbirds concentrated in a natural amphitheater. The caldera environment is unique: surrounded by grass and rocky slopes, containing its own ecosystem sealed off from the surrounding plains.
From volcanic highlands, we descend to the Serengeti , the world's greatest intact large mammal ecosystem and an equally impressive bird landscape. Vast open plains demand telescope work for Secretarybirds and Kori Bustards; granite kopjes harbor Mocking Cliff Chats and sunbirds; river corridors host concentrations of eagles and kingfishers. The raptor activity in the Serengeti is relentless and spectacular.
Your guide is an experienced field ornithologist who knows these ecosystems intimately. We engage in slow, methodical birding: dawn sessions capturing peak vocal activity, crater floor explorations combining wildlife and birding, and Serengeti plains transects that can last all day. This is authentic safari birding.
Day by Day
Itinerary
As we ascend from Arusha, the landscape changes: montane forest patches give way to open highland grassland. The Ngorongoro rim appears suddenly , a vast caldera dropping 600 meters to the floor below. Afternoon birding along the rim begins your Ngorongoro education: Schalow's Turacos call from forest remnants, Golden-winged Sunbirds work the high-altitude flowers, Augur Buzzards ride thermals above the escarpment. The scale is immediate and overwhelming.
Today you enter Africa's most famous crater. The morning descent to the floor reveals a self-contained world: alkaline lake glinting pink with flamingos, open grasslands hosting Kori Bustards and Secretarybirds, marshlands concentrating waterbirds and waders. Afternoon rim birding captures the transition back to montane specialists. The sheer density of both wildlife and birdlife on the crater floor is extraordinary.
The drive west is a transformation. As we descend from 2,000+ meters toward the Serengeti plains, the landscape opens. Forest patches give way to grassland. The bird community shifts: Grey-breasted Spurfowl emerges from the grass; savanna raptors replace highland specialists. By the time we reach the Serengeti, the ecosystem has changed completely.
This is the Serengeti in full expression. The endless plains demand patient searching: Secretarybirds striding across grassland with unhurried grace, Kori Bustards claiming territories, raptors thermals in constant rotation. Granite kopjes rising from the plain harbor Mocking Cliff Chats, sunbirds, and rock-loving species. Woodland margins and river corridors host Fischer's Lovebirds, Silverbirds, and kingfishers. The scale is relentless; the birding equally so.
The final dawn on the plains is often the most productive. Early light brings raptors to hunting and grassland species to calling. A last push for any missed species, followed by a transfer back to civilization , stopping along the way through Ngorongoro to glean any final species and transitions the mood from wild Serengeti to road-bound return.
