Tour Overview
A Complete Uganda Birding Circuit
This 14-day specialist birdwatching tour is designed to cover the full spectrum of Uganda's extraordinary avian biodiversity in a single, expertly paced circuit.
Beginning in Entebbe on the shores of Lake Victoria, the tour progresses westward through the lowland Congo Basin rainforests of Budongo and Semuliki, climbs into the mist-filled montane forests of the Albertine Rift at Bwindi and Echuya, descends to the Nile riverine systems of Murchison Falls, and connects the Papyrus wetlands of Mabamba Bay before returning to Entebbe.
Led by an expert field ornithologist with deep knowledge of the region's specialties, the tour prioritizes slow, thorough coverage of productive microhabitats. Dawn forest transects, Nile boat safaris, canoe excursions through papyrus channels, and canopy observation from forest edges ensure that both target species and unexpected finds are maximized.
Accommodation is carefully selected to place birders within or directly adjacent to prime habitats , including forest ecolodges at Bwindi, a tented camp at Murchison, and lakeside lodges at Entebbe and Bunyonyi , ensuring birding continues from first light to after dusk.
Day by Day
Itinerary
Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to your lakeside hotel. After a short rest and welcome briefing, spend the afternoon in Entebbe Botanical Gardens , a surprisingly productive introduction to Uganda's lowland forest birdlife. Great Blue Turaco, African Grey Parrot, and Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill move through tall trees above manicured lawns.
An early morning canoe departure into Mabamba Bay's papyrus channels , Uganda's most reliable site for the iconic Shoebill. The prehistoric bird typically stands motionless in the reeds before launching into a heavy, measured flight. After the canoe excursion, a lakeside walk reveals Papyrus Gonolek, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, and African Jacana.
Drive north toward Murchison Falls, with a stop at Budongo Forest en route. This allows a first taste of Congo Basin lowland forest, targeting Green-breasted Pitta and Chocolate-backed Kingfisher before arriving at your Nile-side lodge in the afternoon.
A full day at Murchison Falls, combining a morning Nile boat safari with an afternoon game drive across the savanna. The boat journey to the base of the falls passes nesting African Skimmers, Goliath Herons, Rock Pratincoles, and , with luck , a Shoebill in the delta wetlands. On the northern bank savannas, look for Abyssinian Ground Hornbill, Denham's Bustard, and Standard-winged Nightjar at dusk.
A full day in Budongo's famous Royal Mile , one of East Africa's finest lowland rainforest birding experiences. Dawn forest transects begin in near-darkness, listening for the first calls of Ituri Batis and Cassin's Spinetail. Mid-morning mixed flocks carry White-thighed Hornbill, Puvel's Illadopsis, and Yellow-footed Flycatcher through the mahogany canopy.
Semuliki represents the easternmost extension of the Congo Basin , and birdwatching here feels unmistakably Central African. Target the bold Red-billed Dwarf Hornbill, African Piculet, and Black Dwarf Hornbill in humid, flat forest alive with constant bird activity. An afternoon swamp walk provides a second chance at Shoebill in this northern wetland.
Fort Portal serves as a transitional hub between lowland and montane forest. Morning birding around the crater lakes targets Papyrus Gonolek, Shoebill (in some lake bays), and Crowned Crane. An afternoon visit to Kibale Forest edges adds African Pitta, Ross's Turaco, and Blue-headed Sunbird.
The foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains introduce the Albertine Rift montane zone. Moss-covered trees, bamboo patches, and cool humid air define the landscape. Listen for the deep, resonant calls of the Rwenzori Turaco before flashes of crimson wing betray its position in the canopy. White-starred Robin hops along shaded paths.
Two full days at Africa's most celebrated montane forest birding destination. Over 350 species including nearly every Albertine Rift endemic. Dawn transects in dense forest understory target African Green Broadbill, Shelley's Crimsonwing, and Grauer's Warbler. Afternoon swamp edges add Blue-headed Sunbird, Mountain Masked Apalis, and , at dusk , Ruwenzori Nightjar.
Echuya harbours 18 species found nowhere outside the Albertine Rift in a compact, intensely birded forest. The Grauer's Rush Warbler is the star , moving through bamboo, rarely seen but constantly audible. Rwenzori Batis and Archer's Robin-Chat add activity to the cool mountain air.
Morning birding on the volcanic slopes of Mgahinga, where altitudinal gradients produce distinct species assemblages. Dusky Crimsonwing feeds discreetly along forest edges; Kivu Ground Thrush moves cautiously across leaf litter. Afternoons can include gorilla trekking for those who have pre-booked permits.
A half-day boat safari on the Kazinga Channel , one of East Africa's finest waterbird spectacles , combines effortlessly with an afternoon game drive through the Ishasha sector. African Skimmer, Goliath Heron, Saddle-billed Stork, and thousands of waterbirds line the channel banks.
Final morning birding at Entebbe Botanical Gardens before transfer to the airport. A relaxed wrap-up session for any missed species, reviewing the tour list, and saying farewell to Uganda's extraordinary birdlife.
