Madagascar's Rainforest Endemic Specialists

This 7-day specialist birdwatching tour focuses on two of Madagascar's most productive eastern rainforests , Andasibe-Mantadia and Ranomafana , home to the highest concentration of endemic birds on the island.

Beginning in Antananarivo, the tour drives east to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, where lowland and montane rainforest habitats support the iconic Scaly Ground-Roller, velvet-wattled Velvet Asity, and the striking Nuthatch Vanga. The Andasibe circuit includes both the more accessible Analamazaotra reserve and the pristine Mantadia trails, ensuring thorough coverage of this exceptional biodiversity hotspot.

The tour then travels south to Ranomafana National Park , Madagascar's richest montane forest reserve , where all five endemic bird families are present. Here, the Brown Mesite, Pitta-like Ground-Roller, and Yellow-bellied Sunbird-Asity join an extraordinary assemblage of rare and endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. Slow forest transects led by an expert ornithologist maximize encounter chances with the island's most sought-after species.

Accommodation is carefully positioned within or adjacent to prime rainforest habitats, with all meals, expert guidance, and park access included. This is birdwatching designed to celebrate Madagascar's unparalleled endemism in a single, focused week.

Itinerary

D1
Arrive Antananarivo & Drive to Andasibe Transit · Mangoro River stop & rainforest arrival

Drive east from Antananarivo through highland country, stopping at the scenic Mangoro River bridge to scan for Madagascan Pratincole perched on rocks. Arrive at Andasibe in late afternoon for your first forest-edge birding session, orienting yourself to the sounds and rhythms of a Madagascar rainforest. An evening nocturnal walk with flashlights targets the beautiful Rainforest Scops Owl and the rhythmic Collared Nightjar, plus nocturnal lemurs including the haunting calls of Eastern Woolly Lemur echoing through the canopy.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park , Day 1 Andasibe · Lowland & montane rainforest

A full day immersed in Andasibe's twin reserves , Analamazaotra and Mantadia. At dawn, Indri calls provide a haunting soundtrack as you work mixed vanga flocks moving through the canopy with disciplined focus. Deeper Mantadia trails push into primary forest where patient searching rewards you with encounters with the cryptic Scaly Ground-Roller , one of Madagascar's most prized ground-rollers. Velvet Asity males display their dazzling iridescent wattles at forest edges with behavioral intensity, while Nuthatch Vanga works bark like a miniature woodpecker, demonstrating the extraordinary convergent evolution of vangas. Afternoon walks add Blue Coua picking fruit from mid-story perches, Red-fronted Coua skulking shyly, and small teams of Spectacled Tetraka moving through bamboo thickets.

Priority targets Scaly Ground-Roller · Nuthatch Vanga · Velvet Asity · Common Sunbird-Asity · Blue Coua · Red-fronted Coua · Spectacled Tetraka · Green Jery

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park , Day 2 Andasibe · Lowland & montane rainforest

A second full day in Andasibe's diverse forest habitats, targeting any priority species missed on Day 2 while pushing into Mantadia's most pristine mid-canopy zones where few birders venture. Dawn forest transects with Indri calls as your constant soundtrack. Search systematically for Madagascar Long-eared Owl using call-playback, focus on noisy Nelicourvi Weaver flocks working the canopy, and trace the movements of complex mixed vanga associations moving through different height layers, understanding how Madagascar's vanga radiation partitions the forest ecology.

Andasibe Ranomafana (via Ambositra) Transit south · Highland birding en route

A scenic drive south through the central highlands with strategic birding stops in gallery forest threading through rice paddies and in highland marshes where montane wetland species congregate. Madagascar Snipe and Meller's Duck are possible in these montane wetland patches , species that show how Madagascar's elevation gradients create different avian communities. Arrive at Ranomafana in late afternoon for an evening forest-edge session targeting initial montane endemic species that show subtle plumage differences from their lowland cousins.

En route targets Madagascar Snipe · Meller's Duck · Madagascar Wagtail · highland raptors · grassland pipits

Ranomafana National Park , Day 1 Ranomafana · Montane rainforest endemics

A full day exploring Madagascar's richest montane forest, where all five endemic bird families are present , a completeness found nowhere else in Madagascar. Brown Mesite walks quietly through the understorey with the wariness of a ground-dwelling specialist reliant on legs rather than flight for escape. Pitta-like Ground-Roller skulks in the darkness of steep ravines where visibility measures mere meters , finding one requires patience and silence. Yellow-bellied Sunbird-Asity glows iridescent at forest edges where sunlight catches its delicate plumage. Pollen's Vanga and Crossley's Vanga join complex mixed flocks moving through the canopy. The extremely rare Slender-billed Flufftail , one of the world's rarest birds , is possible in marshy forest clearings. Henst's Goshawk hunts methodically from concealed perches, representing Madagascar's endemic raptor diversity.

Priority targets Brown Mesite · Pitta-like Ground-Roller · Yellow-bellied Sunbird-Asity · Pollen's Vanga · Henst's Goshawk · Crossley's Vanga · Brown Emutail

Ranomafana National Park , Day 2 Ranomafana · Montane rainforest endemics

A second full day exploiting Ranomafana's extensive trail system that penetrates pristine montane forest. Target any missed Day 5 species while pushing into more remote ravine trails where few visitors venture. Yellow-browed Oxylabes work lower canopy with meticulous focus, Cryptic Warbler calls from tangled vegetation with a voice more distinctive than its appearance, and Rufous-headed Ground-Roller moves through understory zones with the characteristic swift-footed locomotion of its family. Late afternoon light , the golden hour , often brings complex vanga mixed flocks to forest edges for spectacular viewing opportunities as they move toward roosting sites, providing some of the tour's most visually memorable moments.
